Some variations with the Caroline Extension
Another "One Chief" and the recursive method
Step 1: Opening.
- Do Opening A.
- Release little fingers.
- Little fingers move into the index-finger loop from below and remove it.
Step 2: To add a "Chief" to the right.
- The right thumb moves into the right little-finger loop from above and removes it.
- The right little finger moves over the right upper thumb loop, then moves into the right lower thumb loop from above and removes it.
- The right thumb moves over the right near little-finger string and picks up the far little-finger string.
- The right little finger moves over the right far thumb string and picks up the lower near thumb string.
- Navajo the right thumb and little finger.
Step 2a: Alternative to Step 2 (Exchange the right thumb and little finger.)
- The right little finger moves into the right thumb loop from above and removes it.
- The right thumb moves over the right upper little-finger loop, then moves into the right lower little-finger loop from above and removes it.
- The right little finger moves over the right far thumb string and picks up the near thumb string.
- The right thumb moves over the right near little-finger string and picks up the lower far little-finger string.
- Navajo the right thumb and little finger.
- Note: This step is not fully equivalent to Step 2. Entanglement of strings becomes slightly different.
Step 3. Make up the pattern with index, middle and ring fingers.
Step 4: Ending.
- Index fingers move into thumb loops from above and remove them.
- Thumbs move under index-finger loops and pick up near little finger strings.
- Thumbs move into index-finger loops from below and remove them.
- Do the Caroline Extension.
(1) Entanglement of strings is not the same as that for the original "One Chief" shown in another page.
(2) If you do Step 2 on the left hand, you have a quite similar figure with slightly different entanglement of strings.
(3) If you do Step 2 on both hands, you have "Two Chiefs", which is exactly the same as that shown in another page.
(You may skip the first and second movements.)
(4) Step 2 is repeatable. You can make "Many Chiefs".
One diamond and the recursive method
Step 1: Opening.
- Do Opening A.
- Release little fingers.
- Little fingers move into the index-finger loop from below and remove it.
Step 2: To add a diamond to the right.
- Make sure that the right near little-finger string is located above the right far thumb string at the crossing point.
- The left hand removes the right thumb loop, then insert it into the right little-finger loop from above and put it back onto the right thumb.
- The left hand removes the right little-finger loop, then insert it into the right thumb loop from above and put it back onto the right little finger.
Step 3: Ending.
- Index fingers move into thumb loops from above and remove them.
- Thumbs move under index-finger loops and pick up near little finger strings.
- Thumbs move into index-finger loops from below and remove them.
- Do the Caroline Extension.
(1) If you do Step 2 on both hands, you have a pattern similar to Sardines.
(2) If you do Step 2 on the left hand, you should do the 3rd movement before the 2nd movement.
(3) Step 2 is repeatable.
In case that the right near little-finger string is located below the right far thumb string at the crossing point,
you should do the 3rd movement before the 2nd movement.
Further variations
The techniques shown above, together with the method for Holding up the Sky, can be combined with each other.
They can also be applied to other string figures with the Caroline extension.
