Sardines
This is widely distributed and also called "Men Coming to a Fight" or "Ebbing Tide", etc..
1. Do Position 1 and wrap the near thumb string around the left thumb one turn.
2. The right thumb moves into the left thumb loop from below and shares it.
3. Index fingers pick up the far thumb string, then thumbs hold strings between thumbs and index fingers of both hands.
You may hold the far little-finger string with middle, ring and little fingers.
This is the Caroline Extension.
This represents calm sea.
4. Release thumbs.
5. Thumbs move under the little finger loop, then move back up into the index-finger loop from below and hook down the far index-finger string.
Rotate thumbs down, toward you and back to position with the far index-finger string. During this operation, release index fingers.
6. Thumbs pick up near little finger strings.
7. Do the Caroline Extension.
Two sardines appear. (Two men appear, or, Two rocks appear.)
8. Release thumbs.
9. Thumbs move under little finger loops, then move back up into index-finger loops from below and hook down far index-finger strings.
Rotate thumbs down, toward you and back to position with far index-finger strings. During this operation, release index fingers.
10. Thumbs pick up near little finger strings.
11. Do the Caroline Extension.
12. Repeat Steps 8-11 (= 4-7).
13. Repeat Steps 8-11 two times.

Appendix
You can reduce the number of sardines.
(1) Release index fingers so as to return to the state just before the Caroline extension.
(2) Flip the whole figure so as to transfer
(i) the left little-finger loop to the right little finger,
(ii) the right little-finger loop to the left little finger,
(iii) the left thumb loop to the right thumb,
(iv) the right thumb loop to the left thumb.
To do this, you may use other fingers (or teeth) temporarily, or put the figure on the table, or ask anyone's help,,,,
(3) Do the Caroline extension. The pattern is almost the same as the original.
(4) Repeat Steps 8-11 described above, then two sardines are removed.
